What Customers Say About Netgear ReadyNAS Duo 2-Bay 500 GB (1 x 500 GB) Network Attached Storage RND2150:

Although I'm a techie and would've survived any issues that arose, the installation was remarkably simple. Again 8 hrs later, it was done and the diff verified it. I bought it with 2 additional 1.5TB WDC drives so I could implement a 2-drive RAID + offsite storage strategy for my music and home videos. Occasionally a technically sophisticated product comes along whose installation and use thrills me for its simplicity. The speed of the RAID sync (8hrs) seems too slow but perhaps it's the norm for this class of device. Then hot-swapped in the other 1.5TB drive.

I did a diff to verify the mirrored drive.

I powered it up, plugged it into the Gig-E at home and copied over the data from my iMac.

Can't find any way to encrypt the on-disk data.

The Netgear ReadyNAS 2110 is one of those.

Off-site went the original drive and I've got an almost bullet-proof system.Of course the drive works just fine with my Windows as well as Mac systems for all apps. There are only two weaknesses (perhaps since I haven't RTFM):1.

Then I hot-swapped in one of the 1.5TB drives.

About 8 hrs later, it was fully synchronized.

I'd like to do that just in case a burglar steals the device.2.

Not sure.

List price is $399 and it's best price is about $250 on the net.Lacks JBOD configuration ,iSCSI support and RAID 0 option. It's at EOL and other competitors like Iomega(EMC) have a cheaper, more flexible configurations that come much better equipped (2 TB vs 500 meg) for $222 bucks.

The second level technicians were more experienced and really did try to help but were unable to resolve my problems. At first, the paperwork was "misplaced" for a month or two. The first level technicians had very little if any experience with the Mac but they tried hard. They were polite and tried very hard to help. I have two major complaints that outweigh the helpfulness of the tech support department. Very frustrating experience. It requires that one submit original paperwork, so I submitted all of the original paperwork. The rebate program seems to be sham.

But I had already submitted the original paperwork. Despite statements to the contrary, this is not compatible with MAC OS 10.6. Because the ReadyNAS would not work with TIme Machine in Mac OS 10.6, I spent hours working with tech support. Then I was told that I would have to submit a copy of the original paperwork. The complaints are:1. I spent hours working with tech support to try to get this working with Time Machine, but these efforts failed in the end.2. I offered to take the S/N label off the of the drive to demonstrate - even more conclusively - proof of purchase but they simply said that I would have to submit original paperwork, which they knew I did not have. If you are counting on the rebate, you may want to contact the FTC or your state attorney general to see if there are other complaints similar to mine.

The registration failed. I tried running the enclosed RAID software it couldn't find the device. Granted I already had a NAS on my network, but the supplied software didn't even ask for the MAC address of the unit. In order to obtain support I would have to pay for it. No thanks.

Granted it's a 1TB hard drive, but I wanted to mirror that HD in case of failure, and had to purchase another 1TB HD. So far this has been a great product for what I use it for, which is file storage. One thing that surprised me because I didn't read it too closely, it only comes with ONE Hard drive. The other thing that bothers me slightly, and it may be because I can't figure out how to do it otherwise, on some operating systems you need to have the RAIDar software installed to access the system. Noticed this mostly on my vista machine, win7 machine don't have a problem seeing it in my networked folder.
